How to create an effective homepage for your SimDif website
A good homepage is like a welcoming hub, guiding visitors to the right information quickly. Here's how to make your homepage effective.
Pro Tip 1: Start by creating your other pages
Creating your main pages first, one page per topic, helps you picture your entire site and identify the most important content. You can then lead visitors from your homepage to these key pages, where they can find what they are looking for.
Pro Tip 2: Build your homepage from the bottom up
Use 2 or more Mega Buttons at the bottom to preview and take visitors to important pages.
In the middle use blocks to create sections summarizing the key information from important pages:
➘
• Give each block a clear title.
• Each time you mention a page, put a link on the relevant words to help your visitors learn more, and help search engines understand what is most important in your site.
Highlight what makes you unique near the top of your homepage – this may be your main offer or activity:
➘
• Describe your offer in 2 or 3 sentences.
• Use a Mega Button or Call to Action button to take visitors to this offer.
Write your Page Title at the top of your homepage, just under the header:
➘
• For the homepage, summarize your main offer as concisely as possible.
• Draw inspiration from what most people would search on Google to find your services, before they know your name.
• If relevant to your activities, consider mentioning your city or region.
Choose a header image:
➘
• This image appears on every page of your site.
• It's tempting to add this image at the beginning, but it's easier later on because you will be able to see if it matches your content.
Last but not least, right at the top of the page, write your Site Title:
➘
• This title appears on every page, and stays visible when visitors scroll down to remind them where they are.
• Make it your business or organization name, with your location if relevant, and perhaps one or two keywords.
• Keep it short and to the point.
A few more tips for a user-friendly homepage:
• Give your menu tabs clear and concise labels.
• Group related pages in your menu using spacers.
• Use space and illustrative images to break up text.
• Put the most important content towards the top.
Remember:
Your homepage doesn't need to say everything about your business. Its main job is to guide visitors to the right pages. Avoid overloading it with too much information. Instead, focus on making it easy for visitors to find what they're looking for.
